How to Frost Cupcakes
The easiest way to frost cupcakes like a pro is to use a large piping tip—I love a 1M or 2A for that classic swirl. Let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting or the buttercream will melt. If you’re using a spoon or offset spatula instead of a piping bag, a quick swirl on top still looks beautiful. Want to get fancy? Try adding sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or a drizzle of ganache for extra flair.
How to Store Cupcakes
Store frosted cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days. If you refrigerate them, bring the cupcakes to room temperature before serving for the best texture and flavor. Cupcakes with cream cheese or whipped cream frosting should always be stored in the fridge.
How to Freeze Cupcakes
You can freeze both unfrosted and frosted cupcakes!
- Frosted: Freeze the frosted cupcakes uncovered on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer to an airtight container. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then bring to room temp. Frosting may lose a bit of its shape, but still tastes great.
- Unfrosted: Let them cool, then wrap each one in plastic wrap and place in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 2 months.
How to Transport Cupcakes
Transporting cupcakes is all about keeping them upright and protected. Use a cupcake carrier if you have one—it’s the easiest way to prevent smudged frosting. If not, place cupcakes in a deep baking dish or box with a lid and wedge crumpled parchment or foil between them to reduce shifting. For extra peace of mind, chill frosted cupcakes for 30 minutes before transporting so the frosting firms up.
