The ultimate football puppy chow! Cheer on your favorite team with this game day or super bowl snack recipe!
We’re serving up another easy football snack! The football bark we shared last week is what inspired this football puppy chow! Who knew almonds could make such cute footballs?!
There will probably be more football almonds from now on because they are just so cute and I think my appreciation for almonds skyrocketed!
Football Puppy Chow is perfect for Super Bowl
We took everyone’s beloved party snack (puppy chow!) and football-ified it. I am also pretty confident that almost anything can be football-ified (this word should be added to the dictionary, btw!) and in case you need a little convincing check out these 18 football shaped desserts!
Maybe I should start offering my football-fying services – I’m sure someone would pay money for me to come in and football-ify everything in there house – I’d just throw football almonds everywhere! Haha, kidding.
Ingredients
- chex cereal
- green candy melts
- oil (for melting)
- creamy peanut butter
- powdered sugar
- chocolate chips
- almonds
- small batch of royal icing
How to make football puppy chow / muddy buddies
If you’re a pro at making regular puppy chow, you’ll be a pro at football puppy chow too because it only requires one basic change.. green candy melts! If candy melts are new to you, they are the best invention ever. They are colored chocolate wafers that are super easy to melt, making them great for dipping, coating or sprucing up puppy chow :)
If you’re having a difficult time finding Wilton’s candy melts, I’d suggest looking at Walmart or Michaels. Both of those stores carry Wilton products and should have them, otherwise Amazon green candy melts.
The brown puppy chow follows the standard puppy chow recipe, however I didn’t add a ton of powdered sugar because I wanted them to still remain brown and NOT become all white. So go easy on the powdered sugar.
The green puppy chow follows the standard recipe too but instead of chocolate chips, use green candy melts!
How to turn almonds into footballs
To make the football almonds, use a small amount of royal icing to draw on the football stitches. Let the royal icing harden before adding the almonds to the puppy chow.
I like to use a squeeze bottle when drawing on the stitches, that way I have more control over the icing.
Extra add-ins..
Add in white, green or brown m&m’s if you’d like!

Football Puppy Chow
Ingredients
Green Puppy Chow
- 4 cups chex cereal
- 1 cup green candy melts, like Wilton brand
- ½ tbsp vegetable oil
- ¼ cup creamy peanut butter
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
Brown Puppy Chow
- 4 cups chex cereal
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- ½ tbsp vegetable oil
- ¼ cup creamy peanut butter
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
Add ins
- Football almonds – whole almonds and small batch of royal icing: 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp meringue powder, 1/2 tbsp water
- White, green or brown m&ms
Instructions
To make the royal icing
- Combine the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water in a mixing bowl and mix with an electric mixer until the icing has a matte appearance, about 2 minutes. You may need to add a little more water to get the right consistency. You don’t want the icing to be runny, but have a thicker consistency, but you don’t want it to be too thick where you can’t get it out of the squeeze bottle. Transfer the icing to a squeeze bottle or ziploc bag with one corner cut off.
- On each almond draw the center football stripe.
- Allow the royal icing to harden, 5-10 minutes before adding the football stitches.
- Draw 3 stitches on each almond.
- Allow the royal icing to harden completely before adding the footballs to the puppy chow.
Green Puppy Chow
- Measure out 4 cups of chex cereal into a gallon plastic bag.
- Combine the green candy melts, vegetable oil, and peanut butter in a pot over low heat on the stove. Occasionally stir with a spatula until the chocolate is smooth and melted.
- Pour the melted chocolate into the plastic bag. Zip it shut and shake to evenly coat the cereal with chocolate.
- Add 3/4 cup powdered sugar to the bag, zip, and shake again. If the puppy chow is too sticky, add more powdered sugar 1/4 cup at a time.
- Set aside.
Brown Puppy Chow
- Measure out 4 cups of chex cereal into a gallon plastic bag.
- Combine the chocolate chips, vegetable oil, and peanut butter in a pot over low heat on the stove.
- In a large bowl or serving tray, combine the green and brown puppy chow. Add in the m&ms and the almond footballs.
- Serve and enjoy!

I love this and I’m so excited to make it in the morning for the football goodie platters I’m making. I used melted white chocolate to do the almonds in advance since I was already working on other chocolate stuff. Really quick to dry and works just as well as Royal icing. :)
Thank you for the great idea.
I realize this is an old post – so hope you see it. Will the candy/chocolate melts work without peanut butter? – severe allergy here. But this would be a perfect sack on the table for my twin grandsons’ football themed party.
Hi Jo! Yes, you can omit the peanut butter!
