How to make Homemade Chex Mix

This chex mix recipe makes a great snack for holiday gatherings, parties, or just to have around the house! Get the full recipe with measurements and ingredients in the recipe card below. Follow these 6 easy steps to make your own snack mix:

  1. Prep oven. Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C).
  2. Mix dry ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the Chex cereal, mixed nuts or peanuts, mini pretzels, cheese crackers, and mini bagel chips. Toss the mixture gently to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  1. Make the butter and seasoning mixture. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the unsalted butter. Once the butter is melted, add Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir the mixture until well combined and heated through. You can also melt the butter in the microwave in a microwave-safe bowl.
  1. Combine wet and dry mixtures. Pour the butter and seasoning mixture over the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl. Gently toss the mixture until all the dry ingredients are evenly coated with the butter and seasoning mixture.
  1. Bake. Spread the chex mixture evenly onto two large baking sheets. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes to ensure even coating and to prevent burning.
  2. Cool and enjoy! Allow the Chex Mix to cool completely on the baking sheet before serving. Once cooled, store in an air-tight container to maintain freshness.

Original Chex Mix Recipe Variations

One of my favorite things about Chex mix is how customizable it is. It’s all simple ingredients, but you can add in or take out anything you want! Substitute any other add-ins at a 1:1 ratio. Here are some ideas for swaps:

  • Swap the chips, pretzels or crackers: Swap with your favorites or what you have on hand. For example, you could use bugles, cheerios or corn chips.
  • Make spicy chex mix: Add a dash of Tabasco, your favorite spicy sauce, or add chili powder or paprika to the butter mixture.
  • Make it sweet: Add things l like m&ms, chocolate chips, other candies, coconut, or honey grahams.

  • Holiday season: Place homemade chex mix in holiday tins to share with family and friends as gifts.
  • Football games: This is a crowd favorite for football games. Place in a large bowl with a spoon for serving individual portions, or fill little football-themed paper boxes or bowls.

Best Chex Mix Recipe Storage

Store chex mix in an airtight container at room temperature. Like any other crunchy snack, it’s best in the first few days at its freshest, but when kept sealed, it can last up to 2 weeks.

You can also freeze this chex mix recipe in a ziploc bag with air removed for up to 3 months.

Best Chex Mix Recipe Oven FAQs

Why is my homemade Chex Mix soggy?

Too much liquid can make your homemade chex mix soggy. For best results, follow the recipe exactly for the right amount of liquid that will coat the mix perfectly.

Is it cheaper to buy Chex Mix or make your own?

It is typically cheaper, better tasting, and better for you to make your own chex mix rather than buying it.

Why did my Chex Mix burn?

Over-cooking and forgetting to stir the mixture throughout may cause your chex mix to burn. For best results, stir the mixture every 15 minutes while cooking. This ensures the mixture is evenly coated and that no parts of it get burned.
