This funfetti dip was tested two different ways so you don’t have to guess what works. I found that yogurt creates a lighter, fluffier texture than cream cheese without overpowering the flavor. A short chill time fixes the gritty texture and turns it perfectly smooth. It’s simple, nostalgic, and easy enough for anyone to make confidently.

What Is Funfetti Dip (aka Dunkaroo Dip)?
Funfetti dip is a sweet, no bake dessert dip inspired by the frosting side of classic Dunkaroos. It’s creamy, sprinkle filled, and meant to be scooped up with cookies, graham crackers, or whatever you loved dunking as a kid. Think birthday cake flavor in dip form.

Why I Tested Two Versions of Funfetti Dip
This funfetti dip started with one goal. I wanted it to taste like the dunkaroo dip we all remember sneaking into our lunchboxes. I tested two versions to get there, one with cream cheese and one with vanilla yogurt. The cream cheese version was fine, but it tasted heavier and more cream cheese forward than that classic dunkaroo vibe.
The yogurt version was the one that instantly felt right. It was lighter, fluffier, and still had a little tang that balanced the sweetness without overpowering it.
I also played around with the amount of yogurt because too much makes the dip runny. The final ratio gives you a scoopable, fluffy texture that sets up perfectly after chilling. Right after mixing, the dip can feel a little gritty, which might seem off at first. A short rest in the fridge lets the flour absorb moisture and turns it smooth and creamy, just like it should be.
While testing, I was surprised how many funfetti dip recipes skip heat treating the cake mix. Since cake mix contains raw flour, I like to err on the side of caution and take the extra step to make it safe. Heating it in the microwave until it reaches 165ºF gives me peace of mind.
This recipe is meant to feel like an easy win. No fancy tools, no complicated steps, just a nostalgic dip that actually works if you’re chasing that 90s dunkaroo dip!

Why I Use Yogurt Instead of Cream Cheese

- White funfetti cake mix
- Vanilla yogurt (regular or Greek): After much testing I found that vanilla yogurt yielded the perfect classic dunkaroo dip taste and texture. While the cream cheese version was heavier, the yogurt version was spot on: light, fluffy, with the perfect amount of tang to balance the sweetness.

How to Make Funfetti Dip
You’ll never go back to store-bought once you see how easy it is to make the perfect party dip at home. Follow these simple steps and it takes just 5 minutes! You can also jump to the recipe card for the full recipe.

Heat treat the cake mix. Pour the dry funfetti cake mix into a large microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, stir, then microwave for an additional minute. Use a thermometer to check the temperature, it should reach 165ºF. Transfer the cake mix to a plate and let it cool.

In a mixing bowl combine the vanilla yogurt, cool whip, cake mix and sprinkles. Use an electric mixer on low speed until smooth and combined.

Cover and refrigerate the dip for at least 30 minutes. This resting time allows the flour to absorb moisture and gives the dip a smooth, scoopable texture.
Give the dip a quick stir, then serve with graham crackers, vanilla wafers, animal crackers, or your favorite cookies.

Why You Should Heat Treat Cake Mix for Funfetti Dip
Cake mix contains raw flour, which can carry bacteria and isn’t meant to be eaten without baking. While many recipes skip this step, I prefer to err on the side of caution, especially since this dip is no bake and often shared with kids. Heat treating the cake mix in the microwave until it reaches 165ºF makes it safe to eat and gives me peace of mind. It’s a quick extra step that makes this funfetti dip something you can confidently serve and enjoy.
