Super easy to make candy corn pretzels! This is a fun halloween treat that kids could make using pretzels and colored candy melts.

I love halloween! I always have.

It’s not that I love the idea of free candy and I don’t love the colors black and orange but I love the variety of things that halloween offers.

You could be into spooky things like creepy skulls, skeletons, and tombstone (not really my thing) – I’m into the cute halloween decorations like fun door mats, pumpkins and and the less creepy version of Frankenstein.

In elementary school we’d have a halloween party each year where we could wear our costumes but the thing that stands out to me most is decorating pumpkin sugar cookies. I think we did it every year – it was so fun being able to add as much frosting or sprinkles to your cookie that you wanted. After I decorated mine I never wanted to eat it right away, I wanted to save it so I could look at it. There’s just something about cute treats that make the holiday feel extra special!

So naturally when it comes to halloween, cute treat ideas flood my brain.


This “recipe” for candy corn pretzels is so easy I don’t really think of it as a recipe but more like a how-to.

Ingredients

  • pretzel sticks
  • white candy melts
  • orange candy melts
  • yellow candy melts (I used Wilton brand for all 3 colors)
  • squeeze bottles or similar method to get the colored chocolate in place
  • baking sheet
  • wax paper or a silicone baking mat

The first step is to melt the chocolate. I prefer to melt Wilton candy melts on the stove as suppose to the microwave. I used a small pot over low heat with a tad bit of vegetable shortening mixed in with the candy melts to help thin out the chocolate.

While the chocolate is melting set up your decoration station. Place a baking sheet (or multiple) on the counter, line those with wax paper or a silicone baking mat. Then set up the candy corn pretzel outlines.


Once the chocolate is melted and smooth, transfer each color to a squeeze bottle. While using a squeeze bottle is the most effective method, let’s brainstorm a few other methods in case you don’t have decorating bottles.

You could use spoons and carefully spoon the various colors into the candy corn outlines.

You could place the chocolate in a quart sized ziploc bag and cut off one corner of the bag. I recommend using a quart size bag since the material on those seem stronger than sandwich bags.

You could use a piping bag with a small hole or a small tip as well.

Add the chocolate to the outline, I found it easiest to start with yellow, then orange and white. Once they are all filled in, you could let them harden on the counter or place the baking sheet in the fridge to speed up the process.

After they hardened I did experience some of the pretzels falling off from the chocolate when handling them. When I make them again, I would be sure to have the chocolate go up the sides of the pretzels a bit instead of just filling in the space between the pretzels.

Instructions 

  • In a small pot over low heat on the stove, combine the the yellow candy melts and about 1 tbsp of vegetable shortening. Stir occasionally until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Repeat these steps with the white and orange candy melts.
  • While the chocolate is melting set up your decoration station. Place a baking sheet (or multiple) on the counter, line those with wax paper or a silicone baking mat. Then set up the candy corn pretzel outlines. You’ll use 2 regular pretzels for the sides and a broken pretzel for the bottom.
  • Once the chocolate is melted and smooth, transfer each color to a squeeze bottle or other similar device. Add the chocolate to the outline, I found it easiest to start with yellow, then orange and white.
  • Be sure that the chocolate goes up the sides of the pretzels a bit to ensure that the pretzels won’t fall off after they harden. You can use a toothpick to help get the lines straight and to smooth out any chocolate bumps. Once they are all filled in, you could let them harden on the counter or place the baking sheet in the fridge to speed up the process.
  • After they harden carefully remove the candy corn pretzels from the wax paper. Store leftovers in an air tight container.

Notes

You will need less white candy melts then you will need yellow or orange. You don’t need to melt the entire bag of candy melts at one time, unless you plan to make quite a few candy corn pretzels. Estimate the amount of candy melts you’ll need – but I would suggest melting half of the orange and yellow candy melts to begin with.

  2. These are too cute– and a form of candy corn everyone is guaranteed to like! ;) I have a feeling they’d adapt nicely into Christmas trees, too! Can’t wait to try these!

  3. I’ve been making chocolate lollipops for years so i got pretty good at managing chocolate. just wanted to run another idea by you. I wonder if a baster would work? You would need 3 of them but i feel like you could manage the chocolate in small amounts. Also if you “drew” the triangle of pretzels, with the yellow chocolate inside and then moved pretzels ever so slightly into chocolate triangle, no more issue of pretzels falling off. might want to add to recipe to let layers harden a bit before adding a layer so the choc doesn’t run. Love the recipe;Hope my 2 cents is helpful.
