Homemade Crispy French Fries
Before Ryan and I got married I lived with 10 girls – 11 of us total in 1 house with 2 bathrooms! And I loved that experience and I adore each of them.
There was always someone to hang out with and we seemed to have our best conversations in the kitchen (which had 3 refrigerators!). I learned a lot from them, and picked up a few fantastic recipes too.
This recipe for homemade french fries was a collaboration between a couple of the girls and was a house favorite, hands down, because they taste like restaurant fries but come from your own oven!
When I made this recipe I was hoping the girls would all magically appear so we could dig in together. After graduating from college, we spread out across the country to pursue different avenues, so I miss them dearly!
I used 7 large potatoes, which made quite a big batch for just Ryan and I.
4 things to note for making crispy homemade french fries:
1- slice them thin
2- season them well
3- spread them out in only 1 layer on the baking sheet, you may have to bake them in batches
4- the flip is important (see below!)
Oh guys – I forgot, the 5th thing to note – serve them with any kind of dipping sauce :-)
I am one of those people who like to mix my ketchup, mustard, and barbecue sauce together. Do you do that?
Alright, so the 4th thing to note in making crispy homemade french fries is “the flip”.
What does this mean?
After the potatoes bake for about 20 minutes, you should flip them. In our house the girls used to flip them one by one (dedication I know!), rotating the fries 180 degrees to make sure each side gets nice and brown.
If you don’t want to spend the time rotating each french fry (and avoid burning your fingers) you can use a fork or small flipper to do your best to flip them. Don’t forget to spread them back out into 1 layer as best as you can.
All of this prepping and flipping is worth it!

So now you’ve been let in on our secret french fry recipe.
Good thing you guys won’t have to share yours with 11 girls!

If there is one thing my family and I love it’s french fries!! And now I am officially hungry for them even though it’s 10am. Haha! They look so yummy. I will be saving this recipe for sure!
I think eating them at 10am is just fine – think of them like breakfast potatoes!
They sure look good!
Thanks Mom! I love when you leave comments. :-)
Love these!! Let’s make some!
You make some for dinner tonight!
These look amazing! Yummy,,, pinning them now!
I appreciate you pinning this recipe Rachel!
Hi Beth! Stopping by from Whimsy Wednesday, and had to come check out your fries. Look so crispy and delicious! Pinned!!
Thanks for letting me know where you are coming from Erin!
I love crispy fries, Beth! pinned this :)
Mmmm, so good! Thanks Jamie!
Thanks so much for linking up to All My Bloggy Friends this week, Beth! Shared this on FB! :)
You’re the best Jamie!
fries are my BIGGEST weakness. I LOVE them, and your recipe looks amaziing
I have to admit, if I get a craving for fast food, it’s for french fries too!
Sounds great….I remember those late nights eating crappy food with room mates
Hahaha!! But these are oven baked, so a little less unhealthy :-)
Yum! I think I tried making my own fries years ago, but it didn’t work. I think my needed to cut my fries a little bigger and do the flip you mention. Just looking at these makes my stomach growl. :)
Come on over and get some!
Yum. I recently made baked curly fries, but these look delicious too. Now I wish I could go home and make some right now. Ps. I combine ketchup and mustard only when dipping corn dogs. And, I love ketchup with mayo, like a homemade fry sauce. Yum!
Oh no, I don’t touch mayo even with a 10 foot pole!
I like my fries with mayo and ketchup. Sometimes mixed. A touch of spice doesn’t hurt too, but not hot spice necessacarily, seasoned salt is good, or a garlic mix, like the garlic wine seasoning from The Melting Pot. Thanks for sharing this on All My Bloggy Friends, I’ll have to make them soon!
Enjoy!!
These look delicious! My husband loves fries, so these will definitely be happening!
I hope you both enjoy them!
Wow! These looks soooo good! Nice job. I’m hosing a state art giveaway that you should enter! http://homecomingmn.blogspot.com/2013/10/state-art-giveaway-from-word-lust.html

Sounds yummy. Hubby and I look forward to giving them a try! Thanks for sharing. Linda @ http://www.paperseedlings.com
Mmmm, can I come over too?!
Hi Beth! These fries look ‘fried’! I’m so excited to find a fry recipe that you bake instead of frying in all that hot grease! I can hardly wait to give these a try! Thanks for sharing! Blessings from Bama!
So good and you can feel good about eating them too!!
I love me some french fries. Yay for a homemade recipe so I don’t have to run to mcdonalds to get my fill. ;) Thanks for sharing and for linking up to Thrifty Thursday.
Hahah, this will be good for both of us, no more mcdonalds!
Beth, these look so delicious and I would love some right now! Thank you so much for sharing and joining us at Best of the Weekend! Have a wonderful evening and fantastic weekend!
Thanks for your endearing comment Cindy!
I don’t think I’d better make those any time soon, they look so crunchy and munchy good. I’ll never be skinny if I keep finding all this good food on blog land. Pretty easy also, just have to cut them thinly, watch them, flip them then eat. Oh dear, I can feel my resistance weakening by the second. Good thing I had lunch and filled up on a hot dog and corn chips. I was shooting for a size 10 but think I’ll have to settle for a size 12. Happy weekend I did pin this recipe
Hahah, sorry to tempt you! Thanks for pinning!
Just discovered you and glad to meet you! An older well experienced cook, but never to old to learn new stuff. I’ve been making fries like this for years and they are the best! I definitely agree with you Jennie!
we call them chips in Australia and I love mine with salt and vinegar!
I always love meeting bloggers from the other side of the world. I don’t think I would eat these if they had vinegar on them, I’ll stick to ketchup! Thanks for coming by Deanne!
I like that these french fries are baked and not deep fried in grease. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

We absolutely LOVE homemade fries here. Everyone that comes to our house always requests that I make them. However, I have never tried baking them before. I am going to try your way next time! Pinning!!
Woah, you must be daring if you use oil! I think I would probably burn my house down!
These look fantastic! I love homemade fries! I like to mix a little ketchup, mayo and cayenne to make a sauce to dip my fries in. I love it!
Thanks for linking to the In and Out of the Kitchen Link party! See you next week.
I love how interesting everyone gets with their dipping sauces!

Been on the look out for some good recipes for my daughter who was recently diagnosed with having food allergies to 33 different foods. This is yummy and with some tweaking with the seasoning she can eat them! Making them tonight!
Oh goodness, 33 allergies? I hope you can find something yummy for her!

I agree the flip is important. I flip mine by putting another like-sized pan over the hot one and using potholder gloves I flip it over. It might take a little longer to cook if the new pan is cool (I guess you could heat it up before) but they all get flipped quickly. (Sorry if this tip was duplicated)
Oh I have never thought of that! I feel like it would take some practice to get the flip down without burning myself!
Hi Beth! I saw these at Show Stopper Saturday. YUMMY! These look so good, I think I might just have to make some for our dinner tonight. I usually mix my mustard and ketchup together but haven’t thought to add some bbq sauce, I’ll have to give that a try too. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year! :)
Hi Meg! Can I come over for dinner?! Enjoy!
These are beautiful! Look just like the ones served at Five Guys.
Thanks for sharing,
Raki

They are delicious, thanks for coming by Catherine!
Yum! Just pinned this recipe to my Food & Beverages Pinterest Board for future reference! I am a total French Fries Lover!!!
Awesome recipe! These french fries look thin and crisp…. perfect and just the way I like them. ;)
Clearly I’m doing something with my life wrong, because these fries look soooo much better than mine.
Haha, it’s the flip my friend!
Beth, I love homemade french fries and make them often ~ although lately I have been frying them in olive oil. I need to get back to baking them. I used to slice them thinly into round shapes and mix them in olive oil with spices… Thanks for linking these up to our potato party at Foodie Friends Friday and want to let you know that this is my host favorite for this week. It will be featured over at the Daily Dish Magazine tomorrow afternoon.
Wow these look so good! I used to make them in a pot with hot oil but then I ended up burning myself pretty badly and I’ve never found the nerve to use hot oil again. I love that you make these in an oven. I’ll definitely have to try this recipe out. I’m going to pin it and use it over the weekend! Thanks so much for sharing this.
Love these, Beth! I’m sharing these on FB today… and pinning!
