My husband would totally be happy with a batch of Christmas oreo balls because he loves food gifts – and now I can give him a gift that actually looks like a present AND it’s edible! I think we just covered all the necessary bases!

Oreo balls are a no bake dessert that’s made with blended oreos and cream cheese. You mix those ingredients together until thick, roll in balls, and dip in melted chocolate.

These edible present oreo balls are adorable. Usually oreo balls are rolled into a round ball, but I decided to step up my game by making mine into squares so they would look like presents.

The green and red candy melts, along with the royal icing bows take them to the next level! They are so cute to look at and even better to eat!

Ingredients

  • oreos
  • cream cheese
  • peppermint extract (optional)
  • red and green candy melts
  • royal icing ingredients

How To Make Oreo Balls

Combine the oreo crumbs and cream cheese until thick. 

Form a square. Use a small cookie scoop to portion out an oreo ball, then use your hands to form it into a square.

Refrigerate the oreo balls for 20 minutes.

Melt the candy melts. Dip 1 oreo ball in the melted chocolate at a time.

Harden. Allow them to harden at room temperature before adding the bows.

Pipe the bows onto the oreo balls, add sprinkles if desired.

I dipped my Christmas oreo balls in red and green candy melts because I wanted to stick with classic Christmas colors, but you could get really creative. It would be cool to add edible sparkles to the candy melts to give the presents some shine, or you could always adding sanding sugar to the presents after you dip them.

Temperature of Oreo Balls

It’s important that oreo balls are’t too cold or frozen before you dip them. If you dip oreo balls that are frozen or very cold, the chocolate coating will crack as it sets because of the extreme temperature change.

The best way to avoid cracking is to place the Christmas oreo balls in the fridge to chill for 20 minutes, then dip them.

How to make the bows

Now for the fun part – the bows! I used white buttercream frosting in a small piping bag to add on the bows. I show you 2 different bow ideas in this post but you can add variety by using different colors of buttercream, sprinkles, etc.

How long will oreo balls keep?

Place oreo balls in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Need them to last longer? Read the next point about freezing them!

Do oreo balls need to be refrigerated?

Oreo balls should be kept in the fridge until you serve them. Plus, most people think oreo balls taste best when cold.

However, oreo balls can be left at room temperature. According to the FDA, cream cheese can be left out at room temperature for up to 2 hours.

Tips for Success

Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat. If you don’t have a silicone baking mat, use parchment paper. As you’re forming the oreo balls, place them on the lined baking sheet and place them in the fridge for 20 minutes to chill.

To dip the balls, place 1 oreo balls in the pot with melted chocolate. Use a spoon to spoon chocolate on top, if needed. To remove the oreo ball, use a fork to lift it out of the chocolate.

To remove excess chocolate from the oreo ball on the fork, scrape the bottom of the fork on the edge of the pot to remove  chocolate, then put the oreo ball back on the silicone baking mat.

Christmas Oreo Balls

Ingredients

  • 1 package oreos, about 36 cookies, 15.25 oz
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ tsp peppermint extract, optional
  • Red and green candy melts plus vegetable shortening or oil

White Buttercream

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature
  • cup powdered sugar
  • Pearl ball candies

Instructions 

  • Allow the cream cheese to come to room temperature.
  • Put half of the oreos in a blender and pulse until you have oreo crumbs. Add the other half of the oreos to the blender and pulse again, until all the oreos are fine crumbs. Transfer to a mixing bowl.
  • Add the cream cheese (and peppermint extract) to the mixing bowl, blend using an electric mixer.
  • Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat. Use a small cookie scoop to portion out an oreo ball, then use your hands to form it into a square.
  • Place the oreo balls on the lined baking sheet. Refrigerate the oreo balls for 20 minutes.
  • After 20 minutes, begin to melt the color candy melts (with a little bit of vegetable shortening/oil –  about 2 tsp) in a small pot over low heat on the stove. Stir occasionally until it’s completed melted.
  • Remove the oreo balls from the fridge. To dip, place 1 oreo balls in the pot with melted chocolate. Use a spoon to spoon chocolate on top, if needed. To remove the oreo ball, use a fork to lift it out of the chocolate. To remove excess chocolate from the oreo ball on the fork, scrape the bottom of the fork on the edge of the pot to remove  chocolate, then put the oreo ball back on the silicone baking mat. Continue this process until all the oreo balls are dipped.
  • Allow them to harden at room temperature before adding the bows.
  • Meanwhile, make the buttercream. In a small mixing bowl, beat the butter until smooth. Add in the powdered sugar, beat until combined. Transfer the buttercream to a piping bag fit with a small round piping tip.
  • Pipe the bows onto the oreo balls, adding one line going across the ball then adding another line going the other direction. Pipe the bow on top – I did 2 variations – a triangle bow and a fluffy round bow. I then added round pearl candies to the bows.
  • Serve and enjoy!

    1. I think it’s okay to have them sitting out when needed – but refrigerate before you’re ready to put them out!

  1. Since the crushed oreos are mixed with cream cheese and creamer, would they have to stay refrigerated? I want to include these in gift boxes of cookies to give as gifts, but they would be kept at room temperature for a few days.. I don’t want the recipients to get sick!

    1. Oreo balls are tricky because of that. I know some people wouldn’t think twice about keeping them out, but I do prepare to refrigerate mine or eat them all in one day!!

  2. What can U use in place of the international coffee, I don’t use this and kind of useless to buy for a few tablespoons. Any other suggestions??

    1. Hi Lauren! Yes and no. The coating on oreo balls can crack when going from the freezer to fridge – just something to be aware of. I would probably suggest freezing them without the bow details and adding those on the day before or day of serving.
