Helpful Tools for Making Oreo Balls!

I love using silicone mats for oreo balls because they are easy to remove. Place your oreo balls on a silicone mat to chill in the fridge before dipping. Then return the balls to the mat after you dipped them. Once the chocolate sets, they are easy to remove!

I like using the wilton melting pot because it keeps the melted chocolate at an even temperature. Plus, it’s portable so I don’t have to stand over my stove to dip the balls.

You’ll need a stick for these caramel apple oreo balls. You can use a cake pop stick or a popsicle stick.

How to make caramel apple oreo balls

  1. Pulse oreos into crumbs.
  2. Combine oreo crumbs and cream cheese until thick.
  3.  Form the oreo mixture into balls or apple like shapes and place in the fridge to chill.
  4. Attach the stick to the oreo ball by dipping the end of the stick into the green chocolate, then insert into the ball. Allow that to harden before fully dipping them.
  5. Dip the balls into the green chocolate – place them on a silicone baking mat to harden.
  6. Dip the balls halfway into the salted caramel candy melts. Let them harden for 20-30 seconds, then roll them in chopped peanuts.
  7. Allow the oreo balls to set until the chocolate is dry
  8. Place them on a serving tray and enjoy!

It’s important that your oreo balls aren’t too cold or frozen before you dip them

If you dip oreo balls that are frozen or very cold, the chocolate coating will crack as it sets because of the extreme temperature change. The best way to avoid cracking is to place the oreo balls in the fridge to chill for 20 minutes, then dip them.

Dipping Oreo Balls

I like to use almond bark or candy melts. If I am doing chocolate covered oreo balls I will use either chocolate or vanilla almond bark. If I want them covered in a specific color, use Wilton Candy Melts!

For these caramel apple oreo balls I used Wilton candy melts in green, vibrant green, and salted caramel (or peanut butter). Both Michaels and Walmart have a good selection of Wilton candy melts. I would say that Michaels has a better selection, so check their first!

I like to use vegetable oil or vegetable shortening to help melt the candy melts. Plus it helps to thin out the chocolate so it coats the oreo balls smoothly.

How long will oreo balls keep in the fridge?

Place oreo balls in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Need them to last longer? Read the next point about freezing them!

Can oreo balls be frozen?

Yes! Oreo balls freeze well. Here’s my pro tip: Place 5-6 oreo balls in a row, and wrap in plastic wrap then place them in an airtight ziploc bag for up to 3 months. Note: Be aware that the temperature change from the freeze to fridge (when thawing) may cause some of the chocolate coating to crack. I would recommend making these caramel apple oreo balls without the sticks if you want to freeze them.

How to make oreo balls without cream cheese

I’ve heard you can substitute coffee creamer for the cream cheese! Just use enough creamer until the mixture sticks together. Plus, that way you can flavor the oreo balls!

I’ve also heard that you can use sweetened condensed milk in place of the cream cheese. Use just enough until the mixture sticks together.

How to Store Oreo Balls

Oreo balls should be kept in the fridge until you serve them. Plus, most people think oreo balls taste best when cold. However, oreo balls can be left at room temperature. According to the FDA, cream cheese can be left out at room temperature for up to 2 hours.

Caramel Apple Oreo Balls

Caramel apple oreo balls are the cutest oreo ball recipe to make for the FALL! These fall oreo balls are fun to make – use any flavor oreos you want along with candy melts and chopped peanuts!

Ingredients

  • 1 package oreos, 14.3 oz (this is the standard package)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 bag green candy melts, I used Wilton brand candy melts
  • 1 bag vibrant green candy melts
  • 1 bag salted caramel candy melts, If you can’t find the salted caramel flavor, use peanut butter candy melts, they are the same color.
  • Vegetable oil – for melting candy melts
  • ½ cup chopped peanuts
  • Cake pop sticks or popsicle sticks

Instructions

  • In a blender or food processor, blend all the oreos until you have fine oreo crumbs.
  • Transfer the crumbs to a mixing bowl, add in the softened cream cheese and mix with an electric mixer until well combined. The mixture will stick together when it’s all combined and be thick.
  • Line a cookie sheet with silicone baking mat. Form balls or apple like shapes with the oreo mixture – using about 2-3 tablespoon per ball. Place the cookie sheet in the fridge to chill for 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, combine half the bag of green candy melts and half the bag of vibrant green, along with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and melt until smooth. You can do this on the stove top on low heat or in the microwave, melting them on 50% power, stirring them every 30 seconds until melted.
  • Remove the oreo balls from the fridge. Dip the end of cake pop stick / popsicle stick in the chocolate and insert into the ball. Return them to the fridge and allow the chocolate to harden for 5 minutes. This will help keep the oreo ball on the stick while dipping.
  • When the sticks are set, dip each ball into the chocolate, fully coating it. Place them back on the silicone mat and allow them to harden on the counter – about 10 minutes. Meanwhile melt half the bag of salted caramel candy melts (or peanut butter candy melts if using) with 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil.
  • For this part, I like to dip 3 balls at a time (meaning don’t dip all the balls because the peanuts won’t stick by the time you add the peanuts.) Dip one ball about 1/2 to 3/4 into the candy melts, allow it to cool for 30 seconds, then place the oreo ball in a bowl of chopped peanuts and rotate to cover completely. Allow the oreo balls to set on the counter, then place them in the fridge until serving.

  1. Hi, I wonder if you could use vanilla Oreos and a tsp of apple pie spice instead of the regular Oreos? That way the ‘caramel apple’ theme might be reinforced.
