One of my favorite things since blogging full time has been gathering with a few other women on Mondays to co-work together. We all have creative brains but in different areas. Amy is a craft blogger at Delineate Your Dwelling and Emily is a fashion designer at Mrs. Emily. We all left one place that we thought was home to move here. Pretty neat that we all ended up in the city same, at the same church.

I was bouncing thanksgiving ideas off of them and Emily said that she would love some kind of thanksgiving place card that’s edible. Bells start going off inside my head because if you know me, you know that I love making cute holiday themed treats and being a food blogger, it’s my job to make edible things :)

So I came up with a giant edible turkey place card. A single place card could really be a snack for 2-3 people. I also thought that you could skip the place card idea and use this edible turkey as a centerpiece. And what’s better than a centerpiece that you can eat?!

The turkey’s body is a pear. When you are picking the pears at the grocery store, give them the “sitting test” to see if the bottom of the pear will sit flat on a table. If you’re struggling to find pears that will sit upright, you could always cut the bottom of the pear off to make a flat surface.

The turkey’s feathers are made from dried pineapple, dried apricots, and dried cherries arranged on toothpicks. Cut the dried pineapple and dried apricots into smaller pieces, so they are about the same size as the cherries.

Use baby carrots to cut two little wings and a beak. Those are attached to the pear with tiny toothpick pieces. Lastly, use candy eye balls attached with edible craft glue for the turkey’s eyes.

Add a name card and place by each plate so guests know where to sit. You could also include a fun little note that says, “Gobble me up!”

Or if you choose to use it as a center piece you could include a cute saying like “A little pre-turkey snack!”

Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • pears, one pear per turkey, preferably with flatter bottoms so the turkey will sit upright
  • dried pineapple, cut into smaller pieces
  • dried apricots, cut into smaller pieces
  • dried cherries
  • toothpicks
  • a few baby carrots
  • candy eye balls
  • edible craft glue or frosting, to attach the eye balls

Directions:

  1. Cut the dried pineapple and apricots into smaller pieces, about the same size as the cherries. Assemble a whole bunch of ‘turkey feathers’ by arranging the dried fruit onto toothpicks. I found that I used about 11-13 feather toothpicks per turkey.
  2. Stick the toothpicks into the pear, putting them relatively close to each other.
  3. Use a baby carrot to cut 2 wings and a triangle beak. Attach those elements with small broken toothpicks.
  4. Add the candy eye balls with edible craft glue or a small amount of frosting.
  5. Add a name card - I attached mine to a toothpick and stuck it under the turkey’s wing. Place on the table near each plate or add to the table as a centerpiece. Add little carrot feet if you want. Make a cute sign that says "Gobble me up!" or "A little pre-turkey snack!"
